In Hindu spiritual literature, the word gita has an elevated place. Though gita is generally understood by many to be the Bhagavad Gita, it also applies to many beautiful text in Sanskrit, which are attributed to different sages, together with their teachings. The word gita is derived from the root word ‘gita‘ or ‘sangita‘, which means music or song. Since music or song is considered feminine in Sanskrit, it becomes gita because it ends in a long a sound.
This text takes the form of prayers. Though short, comprising just eighty-three verses, each verse of the Prapanna Gita is imbued with a depth of devotion and total surrender that inspires the spiritual seeker to plunge into the ocean of love for the Lord.
